This is a tragic true story about a 2 year old little boy (sung from the perspective of the child), there were too many people on a cable car, there was a loud noise, the boy's parents lifted him above them protect him.as the cable car crashed. The little boy was the only survivor. The woman who composed the song adopted the little boy. Dimash represents the incredible emotional agony of a child who not only lost their parents, but witnessed their disappearance. With this song especially, it helps to know the backstory ahead of time.

Dimash - Samaltau | Tokyo Jazz Festival 2020

Samaltau - names a beautiful place. The first performance of this song took place at the closing ceremony of the Silk Road International Film Festival (2019) For Dimash this song 'Samaltau' has a special spiritual meaning. This song, very well known in Kazakhstan, is sung about the hard mass of people, about their suffering. It was written when the Tsar forcibly recruited the young men from Kazakhstan during World War I. They marched endless distances. Many did not understand what to do in a foreign country. Their fields withered and their wives, children and elderly parents were left alone. The Tsar, then the Soviets, attacked the country and harassed, recruited and decimated the population. In 1934, after a great famine, 2 million Kazakhs had survived. Today 18 million people live in the Republic of Kazakhstan, 70% of them Kazakhs, 19% Russians and other ethnic groups.
